Dollywood Turns 40: What’s New at America’s No. 1 Theme Park

Dollywood is celebrating its anniversary in 2025, and the park is unveiling new attractions and exciting additions that promise to enhance the guest experience.

Move over, Disney. Dollywood was named the No. 1 theme park in the United States in Tripadvisor's 2024 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Awards. Located right here in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, this one-of-a-kind space is not only earning accolades, but it's also celebrating another milestone this year: its 40th anniversary.

Music legend Dolly Parton, the park's namesake and co-owner, envisioned Dollywood as a place where families could come together to enjoy the culture and beauty of the Smoky Mountains. Her dream has transformed into a thriving hub of entertainment, offering thrilling rides, live music, and unique Appalachian crafts that continue to delight guests of all ages. Since its opening on May 3, 1986, the park has grown into one of the most popular family destinations in the Southeast, drawing over 3 million visitors annually.

This year's celebrations promise to be unforgettable, with new attractions, special events, and surprises planned throughout the season. In this blog, we'll give you a lowdown on the new attractions and throw in some extra tidbits of information that will make your visit to Dollywood even more special.

Dollywood's Legacy

More Than Just a Theme Park

When Dolly Parton opened Dollywood in 1986, she wasn't just building a theme park—she was investing in her hometown of East Tennessee. Her vision was clear: create a space that celebrates Appalachian culture while bringing real economic opportunity to the region. What started in the 1960s as Rebel Railroad, a small Civil War-themed attraction, has since become one of the most beloved parks in the country.

From Steam Trains to Stardom

Before it became the Dollywood we know today, the park went through several transformations — first as Goldrush Junction, then Silver Dollar City Tennessee — each adding a new layer of charm and character. But it wasn't until Dolly stepped in that the park truly found its voice. Under her leadership, Dollywood embraced the rich storytelling and traditions of the Smokies, weaving in music, crafts, and family-friendly fun inspired by her own roots.

Bigger, Bolder, and Busier Than Ever

Fast-forward to today, and Dollywood spans 160 acres filled with more than 50 rides and attractions — from thrilling roller coasters to award-winning theaters and seasonal festivals. And Dolly's original dream? It's been wildly exceeded. Her goal to create jobs for her "family and neighbors" has led to thousands of employment opportunities and a major economic boost for Pigeon Forge.

A Park That Keeps Winning Hearts — and Awards

Dollywood isn't just a fan favorite — it's an industry standout. The park was named Tripadvisor's No. 1 U.S. theme park in 2024 and has earned multiple Golden Ticket Awards, including Best Guest Experience and Best Christmas Event. These accolades speak to what makes Dollywood special: a one-of-a-kind mix of high-quality entertainment and heartfelt hospitality. Or, as Dolly herself might put it, a little bit of sparkle and a whole lot of heart.

What's New at Dollywood in 2025

Dollywood's anniversary season is packed with exciting additions that promise to enhance the guest experience. Here are some of the highlights:

A Brand-New Eatery

Wilderness Pass will soon welcome a brand-new restaurant featuring a hearty menu of rotisserie chicken, smoked meats, braised beef, and classic sides like mac and cheese. With seating for up to 400 guests, including an outdoor patio, this dining spot is set to become a go-to for families looking to relax and recharge.

Country Fair Gets a Refresh

The Country Fair section is getting a vibrant update. Known for its family-friendly atmosphere, this area now features a colorful makeover, a splash pad for kids to cool off, and expanded seating for parents to kick back while keeping an eye on their little ones. During seasonal festivals, the space will transform into themed experiences like Candy Corn Country during the Harvest Festival and Peppermint Valley during Smoky Mountain Christmas.

Imagination Playhouse Becomes a Permanent Fixture

For younger guests, the Imagination Playhouse is now a permanent part of the park. It will host plays inspired by Dolly Parton's Imagination Library books and offer character meet-and-greets during the summer months—a charming addition that combines fun with a love of reading.

Updates to the Classics

Fans of Dollywood's classic rides will notice a few welcome changes. Blazing Fury now features a restored waterfall and an updated track for a smoother ride, while Tennessee Tornado has been refreshed with a new coat of paint. And as a grand finale, the Smoky Mountain Summer Celebration will introduce a dazzling drone and fireworks show honoring Dollywood's four decades of magic.

Dollywood's Seasonal Festivals

One of Dollywood's most unique features is its ability to transform with the seasons, offering immersive festivals that celebrate music, culture, and holiday cheer. For the 40th anniversary, these beloved events are getting even more attention, making them a can't-miss part of any visit.

I Will Always Love You Celebration

The "I Will Always Love You Celebration" kicks off the year in March and runs through April. This heartfelt festival honors Dolly Parton's legendary music career with live performances, special exhibits, and food offerings inspired by Dolly's favorite recipes. It's a joyful tribute to her most iconic song and the spirit of the park itself.

Harvest Festival

As the air turns crisp, Dollywood's Harvest Festival takes center stage, transforming the park with colorful autumn décor, seasonal treats, and festive energy. A standout attraction is Great Pumpkin LumiNights, where thousands of glowing pumpkins light up the evening with a magical glow. During this time, the Country Fair becomes Candy Corn Country, adding a playful twist to the fall festivities.

Smoky Mountain Christmas

Finally, the year wraps up with Smoky Mountain Christmas, a cherished Dollywood tradition. Millions of twinkling lights turn the park into a winter wonderland, drawing visitors from across the country. Holiday-themed shows, seasonal treats, and dazzling decorations fill every corner — especially in the Country Fair, which transforms into Peppermint Valley, complete with whimsical touches and kid-friendly activities.

These festivals sure add extra sparkle to every visit. With something new to experience each season, there's always a reason to come back.

A Glimpse into a Near Future

It's not all about the 40th anniversary — Dollywood is already looking ahead to one of its most ambitious projects yet. In 2026, the park plans to unveil a $50 million attraction as part of the ongoing expansion of the Wildwood Grove area.

According to Eugene Naughton, President of Dollywood Parks & Resorts, this project will be a "revolutionary new experience unlike anything anywhere else in the world." While details are still under wraps, the teaser shared during the park's 2025 season preview hinted at an immersive experience that will take guests "up, over, and through" the Great Smoky Mountains.

Speculation is already swirling. Permits for a 43,000-square-foot building suggest it could house an indoor attraction — possibly a dark ride or indoor roller coaster. This would align with recent guest surveys, which gauged interest in new ride experiences of that kind. If the rumors are true, this would be a major addition to Wildwood Grove, further establishing it as one of Dollywood's most imaginative and innovative areas.

Plans for 2026 also include the refurbishment of a legacy attraction. Many believe this could involve Blazing Fury, Dollywood's oldest ride, which bears similarities to Silver Dollar City's recently rebuilt Fire in the Hole. While no official confirmation has been made, longtime fans are eager to see how Dollywood might reimagine one of its most nostalgic experiences.

With these developments on the horizon, Dollywood shows no signs of slowing down — continuing to push creative boundaries while staying rooted in Appalachian heritage and storytelling.

In other words: visitors can expect a mix of fresh thrills and heartwarming traditions for many more years to come.

Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge Beyond Dollywood

While Dollywood is arguably the crown jewel of the region, both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge offer many more attractions that'll make any trip to the Smoky Mountains even more memorable. Here are some top picks:

Anakeesta

Nature and adventure come together at Anakeesta, a mountaintop adventure park that's equal parts thrilling and serene. Guests can enjoy ziplining, stroll along treetop canopy walks, or simply take in the panoramic scenery from one of the park's scenic overlooks. With gardens, shops, dining, and even seasonal events, Anakeesta offers a full day of family fun with an unbeatable view.

The Island in Pigeon Forge

Right in the heart of Pigeon Forge, The Island is a lively entertainment complex that's perfect for families and visitors of all ages. You'll find everything from boutique shops and Southern-inspired restaurants to can't-miss attractions. The centerpiece? The Great Smoky Mountain Wheel, a 200-foot Ferris wheel offering panoramic views of the town and nearby mountains. By night, the synchronized musical fountain show adds a magical touch to the experience with dancing lights and music that create a peaceful, festive vibe.

The Mountain Monster

If you're craving an adrenaline rush, look no further than The Mountain Monster at The Mountain Mile. This towering thrill ride experience includes three high-octane adventures: a free-fall drop, a sling-shot launch, and a swinging ride that dangles riders 200 feet in the air. It's not for the faint of heart — but it's an unforgettable way to take in the Smokies from above (if you can keep your eyes open!).

Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies

Just a short drive away in Gatlinburg, Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies is one of the top-rated aquariums in the country — and for good reason. With interactive exhibits like a glass-bottom boat ride over a shark-filled tank, and the always-popular penguin encounter, it's a hit with kids and adults alike. The immersive design brings the wonders of the ocean to the mountains in the most delightful way.

Gatlinburg SkyLift Park

For jaw-dropping mountain views, head to Gatlinburg SkyLift Park. Take a scenic ride up the mountainside, then cross SkyBridge, the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America. With a glass-floor section in the middle, it's both awe-inspiring and a little heart-pounding. The views of the Smokies stretch for miles—and make for some pretty unforgettable photo ops.
