One of the best things about winter in the Smoky Mountains is the ski season at Ober Gatlinburg! This popular ski area features everything from convenient equipment rentals to professional ski lessons. Whether you are hitting the slopes for the first time or consider yourself an expert, you are sure to have a blast on the mountain! Here is everything you need to know about skiing at Ober Gatlinburg:
1. Trail Information
There are 10 trails to enjoy while skiing at Ober Gatlinburg, each which has been designated in a category of Easiest, More Difficult or Most Difficult. When planning your day, review the official Ober Gatlinburg Slope Report to find out the latest conditions and to research those trails that are most appropriate for your skill level. There are multiple lifts that serve the trails, including the Aerial Tramway that provides transportation from downtown Gatlinburg to the top of the mountain. Note that depending on the weather conditions, some or all of the trails may be closed for the day so always check ahead! Remember, there are plenty of activities at Ober Gatlinburg other than skiing to check out as well!
2. Hours of Operation
The Ober Gatlinburg ski area normally opens in early to mid-December and closes in early to mid-March, but the exact opening and closing dates are determined by mother nature. Therefore, the dates from one ski season can vary to the next and are usually not predictable until just a few days in advance. The normal operating hours during the season are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays, noon to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and holidays. The only exceptions are on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, when the ski area is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and noon to 7 p.m., respectively.
3. Ski Area Tickets
The tickets for skiing at Ober Gatlinburg include unlimited access to the ski slopes for one session of skiing or snowboarding. There are various sessions available, including a Full Session, Twilight Session and Night Session. The rates vary for adults (ages 12-59), juniors (ages 6-11) and seniors (ages 60-69). If you are 70 years or older, you can enjoy a free ski ticket to the slopes! There is also a free ski ticket provided for a child 5 and under when there is a paying adult. Keep in mind that any participants under 18 years old who are skiing without a parent present must bring a Minor Liability Form signed by a parent.
