3 Ways to Celebrate Veterans Day in the Smoky Mountains

Every year, the people of East Tennessee show their appreciation for our nation's heroes with a wonderful collection of Veterans Day events. For 2014, the cities of Gatlinburg, Sevierville, and Pigeon Forge will each host their own ceremonies for this meaningful holiday. If you plan on spending Veterans Day in the Smoky Mountains we invite you to participate in these three excellent celebrations scheduled for November 11, 2014.

1. Gatlinburg Veterans Day CelebrationGatlinburg's Veterans Day Celebration will take place at the plaza in front of Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies, located at 88 River Road. The ceremony will last from 11 a.m - 2 p.m. Admission to this event is completely free. This moving tribute to America's military will feature many local servicemen and women. Guests will enjoy patriotic music and stirring speeches delivered by notable guest speakers. Veterans in attendance will be recognized for their service, and there will be a special remembrance for soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. In past years the ceremony has also included a live bald eagle and a military flyover. In recognition of its annual celebration, the city of Gatlinburg has been named an official Regional Site for the Observance of Veterans Day. This special honor is bestowed by the Veterans Day National Committee, a branch of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

2. Sevier County Veterans Day ProgramThe Sevier County Veterans Day Program will be held at the Sevier County Courthouse, located at 125 Court Avenue in Sevierville. The event will begin at 11 a.m. on Veterans Day, and admission is free. Sevierville's ceremony will feature members of both the local and state government. Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters and State Senator Doug Overby will both be in attendance. A highlight of the celebration will be a flyover by the Warbirds of America, a group of World War II-era fighter airplanes.

3. Pigeon Forge Salute to Veterans ParadePigeon Forge will observe the holiday with its 4th Annual Salute to Veterans Parade. Kicking off at 4:30 p.m., the parade will start at Traffic Light #10 and travel along the north side of the Pigeon Forge Parkway. At 5 p.m., the parade will draw to a close at Patriot Park, located at 186 Old Mill Avenue. Guests at the parade can expect to see patriotic floats featuring great music and entertainment. The afternoon of November 11 also marks the official kickoff of Smoky Mountain Winterfest. Be sure to stick around after the parade and usher in the seasonal fun!
