4 Best Winter Hikes in the Smoky Mountains

When people visit the Smokies, one of the one most popular activities is hiking. Throughout the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, there are hundreds of amazing trails that offer spectacular views of the mountains. Hiking is a thrilling activity all times of year, but especially during winter. Although the temperatures may be chilly, the trails are less crowded and you will be treated to unbelievable sights along the way. Here are 4 of the best winter hikes in the Smoky Mountains:

1. Laurel Falls

The hike to Laurel Falls is one of the most popular trails in the Smokies, and for good reasons. First of all, this is a relatively short hike at just over 2 miles roundtrip. This makes it a good beginner's hike for children. In addition, at the end of the trail you will be greeted by one of the most beautiful waterfalls the area has to offer. During the winter season, this is an excellent place to see ice formations hanging from the falls and the nature around it!

2. Rainbow Falls

Speaking of ice formations, the one that sometimes appears at Rainbow Falls is something you will want to check out! During extended winter cold spells, you might be lucky enough to catch ice hanging from this amazing 80-foot waterfall! In total, the hike to Rainbow Falls is 5.4 miles. If you hike this trail during the winter months, take extra caution because parts of the trail have rocky terrain and may be icy. If you want to keep hiking past the falls, the summit of Mount LeConte is just over 4 miles down the trail.

3. Alum Cave Trail

Alum Cave Trail is one of the most beautiful winter hikes in the Smoky Mountains. About 2 miles into the hike, you will reach Inspiration Point, which provides beautiful winter scenery of the Smokies. As you look out over the mountains, there is a good chance you will see snow blanketing the top of the higher elevations.
